Everyone has their own investment philosophy. And someone as versatile and active as Rohit Chanana had to have a very interesting one.
I met him at DLF Golf Resort Ltd in Gurgaon recently, and this is what I learned from him.
Angel investing is all about investing in the founder. And this is how they can be evaluated:
Biology – does the founder have a positive vibe. A couple of in depth conversations tells you a lot about the vibe and aura of the person to tell you if you want to spend more time with him.
Chemistry – does your value system match, and do you find a personal chemistry with the founder?
Physics – what is the business model and functioning of the business, and is this logical?
Maths – does the number add up? Does the founder know and understand his numbers properly? How will unit economics work out?
I was impressed with his ability to put ideas and concepts in frameworks. It makes them easy to remember and apply.
His ‘dil se’ philosophy definitely connected with me deeply. His curiosity and desire to learn, and give back to the world in the form of knowledge is infectious to say the least.
There is no right or wrong investment thesis. In fact, most of the time the thesis keeps evolving and changing, based on your experiences and learnings.
What is your investment thesis?
