Why the Current AI Wave May Go Bust

Every major technological revolution has seen its early waves crash — not because the technology lacked potential, but because of three recurring patterns: infrastructure insufficiency, over-expectation and under-delivery, and human adoption challenges.

The current AI boom feels no different.

1. Infrastructure Insufficiency âš¡ The rapid advancement of AI has outpaced the readiness of the underlying infrastructure.

Power Demand: By 2030, the power needs of AI supercomputers alone could reach 9 gigawatts — the equivalent of powering 7–9 million homes. (Business Insider)

Compute Infrastructure: Spending on AI compute and storage infrastructure reached $47.4 billion in just the first half of 2024 — a 97% year-over-year increase. (IDC)

Today's infrastructure is simply not ready for mass AI adoption at this scale.

2. Over-Expectation and Under-Delivery 🎢 The AI hype cycle is pushing expectations into unrealistic territory.

Adoption vs. Outcomes: Generative AI adoption grew 17% in 2024, but issues like poor data quality and declining ROI are becoming more visible. (VentureBeat)

Risk Management: McKinsey's 2024 report found that organizations are increasingly worried about AI-related risks — including inaccuracies, cybersecurity threats, and IP violations.

When outcomes can't keep pace with expectations, disappointment inevitably follows.

3. Human Adoption Challenges 🧠 Technology adoption isn't just about better tools; it's about human behavior.

Employee Trust: 57% of workers are using AI tools at work without disclosing it to their employers. (Business Insider)

Training Gaps: Only 47% of employees reported receiving any formal training on AI. (Business Insider)

Organizational Barriers: According to BCG, 70% of AI implementation challenges stem from people- and process-related issues, not the technology itself. (BCG)

Without deeper cultural and skills transformation, even the best AI tools will fail to deliver full value.

What This Means 🌊 If history is any guide, the first wave will crash — and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Each crash clears the hype, strengthens the foundations, matures adoption curves, and paves the way for the next, stronger wave. Eventually, AI will become so embedded in our lives that we won't even call it "AI" anymore — just like the Internet, mobile, or e-commerce.

For Entrepreneurs Like Me 🚀 I'm more convinced than ever that a bubble burst is coming — and sooner rather than later. This is not an indication of what AI holds for us in future. It is just a small reset, which we have seen in past. Also, for early adopters and geeks (like me!) - it will never subside. I am hooked on to it - forever.

And, for application-centric entrepreneurs, the real opportunity lies not in chasing today's hype, but in riding the right wave when it emerges. Interesting times ahead.
